As you are working, keep this question in mind:
How do people from different cultures moving to America affect that area through immigration?

As you are entering the United States you will have to go through some of the steps that an immigrant would have to.

The Process

You and your family will take  a virtual tour of Ellis Island to experience what it was like to immigrate  to the United States during the late 1800's to the mid 1900's.

    1. Watch the virtual tour of Ellis Island, and write your feelings on student blog.

    2. Coming to the United States today is different than it was back in the 1900's.  How is it different now     than it was then?  Research online the difference between immigrants in the past and present. Print off the  compare and contrast worksheet. You will work with your shoulder buddy, but each one needs to do        the worksheet.

    3. Watch the PowerPoint of other immigrants. Write what you see and what you feel about the pictures.       What are the pictures saying to you?  Write this on the student blog.

    4. You will be divided into groups of three, one from each role. This will be the group that you will do          the project with.

    Your roles will be:

Graphic Designer- You will be designing the inside of the store, the brochures and, if your business is a restaurant, you will also be designing the menu. You will need to research the prices of the items you intend to use.

Business Person- You will decide where to start the business. You will be managing the money, the buying and selling of products, and the hiring of workers. How many workers can your business afford? You will also need to research prices of buildings. You will need to research the area: What type of people live there? What are you selling? What do the houses look like in the area? You will also be helping the graphic designer, and designer/chef with the amount of money they can spend.

Designer/Chef- You will describe items that will be sold in your business, or recipes of food that will be sold in your restaurant. You will research items (clothing, antiques, art work, food, etc.)  and their cost, and price the items.

Remember you are a family. If your business is successful you will need to work together.

You only have $50,000.00 to spend. Use it wisely.

    5. You and your family are coming to the United States to start a business. What culture are you and           your family going to be from? Pick a country and research that culture to see what you could bring to     the United States to start your business (food, clothing, recreation, etc.). Take notes on the countries       to decide what country your family would like to be from.

    6. Take the U. S. citizen test. Are you capable of becoming a U. S. citizen? Make sure you put all three of     your first names on the certificate. Print off your certificate. (You might need to take the test a couple     of times before you can print your certificate.)

    7. Answer questions about your families immigration to the United States. Print off                                    Immigrant Reflection Sheet. Answer these questions with your group using complete sentences. Then     answer the questions below on the same sheet using complete sentences as you are getting your           business started.

     8. Questions to ask yourselves:
Is there enough money to pay the rent, utilities, and your employees?
Have you put the right prices on the items?
Is the business located in the right area to make money?
Will your products be shipped, or made in the United States?
Are the products you are selling right for the area you have chosen?
Discuss the plans with your family.
         Will your family survive?
Will your business make enough money to survive?
What will an affective business look like?
Write a contract of what each person is going to do.

    9. Now that you have chosen what your business is going to be, you and your family need to decide         what furniture you need for your business. When you do your research keep the furniture you have         chosen in mind, but also make a list of items and prices of things that your family may have forgotten.

    10. After you have created your teams and picked your countries, you will get into groups of three with       other people that are doing the same job that you are to do your research. You will need to                     research at least four different items/places, and write them on the spreadsheet for                                 research for each item/place. Then write what you have chosen at the bottom. You may use the               websites below or choose your own.

If you are looking for items other than food, do a Google search of items from that country.

    11. Now return back to your family and began your process of starting your new business.

    12. Create your business

Glue your furniture pieces down on the paper       like it would look in your building.

    13. Create your brochure
Open Word, then go to File and click on Project Gallery.

Make sure you have the prices of your items and what they are on your brochure.

    14. Make a story board and story map, then create a commercial in iMovie advertising your business. Be sure to add as much information about your business as you can (products, prices, location, etc.).

    15. Your group will be presenting your commercial along with your drawing and brochure.
